‘Studying at Newham College has provided me with a lot of opportunities that I wouldn’t have had otherwise.’
Originally from Germany, Carlotta Zeitelhack enrolled for the Fashion Foundation Diploma Level 3 at Newham College in 2012. Studying for her A Levels in Germany, Carlotta had no clear direction in terms of what she wanted to do in the future.
‘I was always interested in creativity but there weren’t many opportunities to pursue this in Germany for free.’
Whilst in the UK, Carlotta was referred to the Colleges’ Fashion Foundation Diploma course through a friend who had seen the advertisement flyer. She jumped at the chance of taking part in the FREE diploma!
Throughout her study, the course opened up many doors for Carlotta, including the opportunity to take part in exhibitions at the College and the Fashion & Textile Museum, showcasing her designs to a wide audience. This later led Carlotta to enrol in the Bespoke Tailoring course at the College.
As well as exhibiting at various shows, Carlotta’s garments and sketches were also selected to take part in a textiles competition at the Morley Gallery, arranged by the College – which she won!
Carlotta loved the studying environment at Newham College. She found both the students and teachers helpful and supportive.
‘Studying here at Newham College was extremely different from studying in Germany. I love that the College is open to EVERYONE, and receiving support in travel and food expenses was an added bonus.’
The Fashion Foundation Diploma provided Carlotta with many opportunities to build on her portfolio – from helping teachers with a range of projects to taking part in events and exhibitions put on by the College – all of which have given Carlotta the experience and knowledge required to further her studies and pursue her dreams.
‘I am now planning on studying Costume Design for Performance at university and thanks to Newham College I have been able to build up my portfolio, which is essential when applying for placement.’
