Exchange: Maiju

Maiju is nineteen years old from Kotka, a small city in Finland. She studies Business and Administration at Etela-kymenlaakson ammattiopisto. This is her last year at college so she decided to try something different and do a work experience placement in London.

Her time has been divided by working in one of the offices at Newham College and at the Business Lab in Stratford. Some of her tasks have included photocopying, basic admin, assisting the business advisors and organising and setting up weekly workshops at the Business Lab. However Maiju says that the most challenging thing has been the language barrier but she says she thinks she has made big improvements.

Her plans for the future include going to university and returning to London to work sometime in the future.

Exchange: Gloria

Gloria is from Vicenza in Italy and she studies IT and Economics at college. She got the opportunity to do a four week work experience placement in London working for the IT department of Newham College.

Nine of the most hardworking students were picked from the college for this opportunity. Gloria says that the work experience will give them a head start when looking for jobs as there is a lot of competition in Italy and this will improve their CVs.

Her main tasks were website design based, however she says that she has also improved her HTML coding and learnt to use new programmes which she has not studied in Italy. Gloria also claims that she has improved her knowledge of the English language and is a lot more confident using it.

During the group’s free time they made the most of the British summer, exploring  London and its rich culture.

Exchange: Joanna

As a part of the Erasmus+ exchange programme Newham College and its European partners have brought Joanna to London from Majorca, Spain to complete a month long work placement.

Joanna is currently enrolled on a Commercial Studies course at her local College in Majorca, and was keen to experience as many elements of business as possible on her placement.

Newham College’s Centre for Innovation and Partnerships placed Joanna with Jen Exports; a full service transportation and logistics company based in Rainham, Essex.

Joanna took no time at all to fit in at Jen Exports’ head office. Coincidentally one of Joanna’s new colleagues was in the process of learning Spanish. So, they helped each other out in the language department.

During Joanna’s time at Jen Exports she worked predominantly on administration, organisation and marketing materials such as posters and flyers.

Sam, Joanna’s manager and owner of Jen Exports, has been very impressed with Joanna’s development over the four weeks, and hopes she’s heading back to the UK very soon.

“She can come back any time. There’s a job for her here if she wants it! She’s been a model employee!

Joanna is confident that her experiences here in the UK will help her with finding work in the future.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time in London as it’s helped me to become more independent and improve my professional experience. I feel I understand business a lot better after experiencing the day to day running of the company.”
